Thursday Thoughts :: Lack of Sleep

Seriously, being a mother is effing hard. I don't want you to think I hate being a mom because it's the best thing that ever happened to me and I count my blessings for my two beautiful children every single day, BUT it's hard. The hardest part I'm currently facing is lack of sleep. You have these nights where as soon as you get to sleep, one kid is up with a bad dream, and then 2 hours later your 3 month old is up for 3 hours, and then an hour later, your toddler is up for the day! I had one of those last night, and I feel like hell in a hand basket today. And the thing about being a mother is, you kind of just have to ignore it, drink loads of coffee and count down the minutes until bed time. Lucky for me, my kids are still at the ages where we can cozy up and do low-key activities all day, and there is a slight, slight chance that naps will happen at the same time and I can squeeze in some zzz's. I know that won't last forever, but I guess the babies being up at night thing passes, too, and then it's something else.<br /> <br /> I'm also lucky that I don't have to report into a job where my mind needs to be sharp, I seriously don't know how I could do that after a night like last night. I would like to bow down and give these mothers serious, serious props. Being a stay-at-home mother isn't always easy, but the whole "not reporting in and holding yourself accountable for anything other than family" is very forgiving.  Put me in front of a room to do a presentation after last night, shut your business down.<br /> <br /> I don't know why exactly I'm posting this today, but I think a lot of other moms read this blog and soon-to-be moms as well, so I'd like them to know they are not alone, and warn the soon-to-be moms what they are in for (not to scare you away!). I met with a wedding client while I was in Florida, and she asked me what it's like with two. I went into everything, the good and the bad, and she was so appreciative that I didn't sugar coat it, so I guess I'm transferring that here. She also saw me without make-up, hair a mess, holding a crying baby, my bathing suit probably falling down my annoyingly large breasts that were definitely showing nipp, and a great husband playing with our toddler in the water while we chatted (as you can guess, we took the meeting to the beach).<br /> <br /> To conclude, I'll say it again, motherhood is by far the most rewarding and fulfilling thing I have ever done, but hard in that it never lets up. Hi Everyone! We're just getting back from a week away in the sunny land of FLA, and boy was it adventurous! Traveling with two little ones is definitely different from one (much harder) but luckily we found an awesome babysitter to help so we could relax after entertaining the kids all day. I'll post more about traveling with two later this week but for now I wanted to share a program I'm taking part of on instagram hosted by <a href="http://www.instagram.com/fitgirlsguide">FitGirlsGuide</a> called the #28dayfix. I decided to join on the plane home after indulging in a weeks worth of margaritas. It's basically a workout program and eating plan you follow for 28 days to lose pounds and inches. I've lost a little weight since posting about <a href="http://purejoyhome.blogspot.com/2015/09/losing-weight-after-baby.html">my postpartum weight loss journey</a> but kind of wanted a little kick in the butt to get the rest off (another 5 to go!) especially after all those margies.<br /> <br /> The cost is about $25 and you get a 200 page packet of workouts, recipes, and a calendar to follow along with a plan for each day. Today was day 1 and I'm feeling good and pretty excited about it! I've never done anything like this and actually feel like I'm eating more today than I generally have been but my workout this morning was definitely harder. It's suuuper easy to follow and it will be fun to track my progress along with the hundreds of other girls doing it on instagram. I did have a scarf on over it but I thought it took away from the simplicity of the dress so I let it be, understated style :) And the best part is, it has pockets! Balsamic Glazed Pot Roast with Dijon

I have heard and read about several pot roast recipes lately and was dying to give <a href="http://www.jcpenney.com/crock-pot-6-qt-countdown-touchscreen-digital-slow-cooker-5-printable-mail-in-rebate/prod.jump?ppId=pp5006170420&searchTerm=crockpot&catId=SearchResults&_dyncharset=UTF-8&colorizedImg=DP0128201517014683M.tif">my new Crock-Pot from JCPenney</a> a spin. I have never really been good at slow cookers, everything usually comes out so soupy but I killed it last night with this one. The good thing about the meat is it's cheap and can feed a lot of people, it just has to be slow-cooked or it will feel like you're biting into a tire.<br /> <br /> So here is what you need to pick up from the store:<br /> <br /> 1) MEAT : From the front portion of the animal; look for chuck roast, shoulder steak, boneless chuck roast, chuck shoulder pot roast, chuck seven-bone pot roast, or beef chuck arm.<br /> <div> 2) 1 yellow onion</div> <div> 3) 1/2 cup of balsamic vinegar</div> <div> 4) 3 tablespoons of a good seedy dijon mustard</div> <div> 5) 1 quart of chicken broth (though you'll probably only use half)</div> <div> 6) About 3 large carrots (not baby carrots, I have a thing about them in cooking, baby carrots are for snacking)</div> <div> 7) A bag of small potatoes like the red ones or yukon gold (but small, think golf ball size)</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> Here is what you have to do: </div> <div> <br /></div> <div> Get out your dutch oven. Set the heat on medium-high. Take out your beef and liberally salt and pepper it. Leave the residue in the pan. Chop up your onion and with a little olive oil, sauté the onion until transparent. Add your balsamic and dijon and let reduce so it becomes more like a glaze or sauce. As I write this blog post, Grace is in my arms and I'm pausing about every 30 seconds to shush her to sleep. This is my morning without Brian (he's in daycare two mornings a week - woohoo!)<br /> <br /> THE ABSOLUTE WORST happened last weekend and this was really my awakening. You are going to think less of me but here it goes, I missed my best friend's son's christening. Yep. I literally was in tears that night when I realized. I mean how bad is that??? Luckily, I keep nice friends who understand and forgive but I'll never forget what an asshole I was to forget that. MONDAY MIXOLOGY :: ELDERFLOWER MARTINI

I know, I know, it's Monday so we should be getting our sh** together, detoxing, and starting the week off on a healthy foot, i.e. not drinking cocktails, but I had to post about my new specialty and I liked the way "Monday Mixology" sounded so I'm going with it. I had this delicious martini a couple weekends ago on a date night with my husband and thought it was the best drink I'd ever been served. I finally got around to buying the ingredients this weekend and we had some friends over who verified that it is indeed an awesome drink.<br /> <br /> To be honest, I never been much into cocktails...wait that's a total lie, I lived on "vodka sodas" in college and in my early twenties in NYC. Anyhow, in my adult years I should say, I'm not much of a cocktail girl unless we're at a special function or a girls night out...or I'm having a fun night out with my hubby...OKAY so maybe I am a cocktail girl after all?? I guess I should say I've never appreciated the flavor and what goes into mixing a delicious drink, until this one.
